Preparing wells for CO2 storage in the North Sea

Work is currently underway offshore to prepare existing wells for CO₂ injection.

The process involves reconfiguring wells that were originally used for oil production, so they can safely handle the injection of CO₂ into the reservoir. This includes installing new equipment and barriers by running a wire deep into the wells, approximately 1,800 metres down into the well, to ensure they are ready for their new purpose.

Well preparation takes several weeks and requires careful planning and execution offshore.

The work is carried out from the platform, with personnel accessing the installation through a combination of offshore logistics solutions, including helicopter transport and, when conditions allow, a walk-to-work vessel via gangway.

This is a key step in preparing the infrastructure needed for safe and permanent CO₂ storage in the North Sea as part of Greensand.
